Document Preparation
How to build a clear immigration document checklist
A strong document package begins with a checklist tied to the exact form, notice, or benefit being requested.
Begin with the official instructions
Identify the current form edition and read its instructions before collecting evidence. Write down every required supporting item, filing fee, signature, translation, photograph, and deadline. Requirements can change, so verify them on the official agency website.
Organize evidence by purpose
Create sections for identity and civil records, immigration history, relationship evidence, financial records, and case-specific proof. Label each item by what it establishes instead of placing documents in a single unsorted folder.
Track what is missing
Mark each item as received, incomplete, expired, awaiting translation, or not applicable. Keep a separate question list. Never alter a document to make it fit a requirement; resolve discrepancies openly and seek legal advice when needed.
Make a final record
Before submission, confirm signatures, dates, page order, addresses, fees, and delivery method. Keep a complete copy of everything sent and proof of delivery.
